In Washington D.C., the court will examine whether a modification of alimony is necessary when there has been a change in circumstances. For example, if your ability to pay alimony has changed or your former spouse’s needs have changed, the court may choose to modify the alimony award currently in effect. To request a modification of alimony, file the request with the court that heard your divorce case. For more information about how to file the request, see http://www.dcbar.org/for_the_public/legal_information/family/family_court_forms/index.cfm.
