To respond to an unlawful detainer, complete Judicial Council of California Form UD-105, Answer to Unlawful Detainer. You have five calendar days from the date that you were served with the unlawful detainer complaint to file an answer. In your case, the first day to respond would be Sunday, and your time to respond will expire at midnight on Thursday. In addition, before you file your answer with the court, you must first provide a copy of your answer to your landlord. The answer can be served in person or by mail. You will need to file a proof of service form with the court to prove you served the defendant with a copy of the answer. If you do not file your answer within five calendar days, your landlord can request the court to enter a default judgement.
