The California Code of Civil Procedure § 416.90, entitled "Service on other persons," reads as follows:
A summons may be served on a person not otherwise specified in this article by delivering a copy of the summons and of the complaint to such person or to a person authorized by him to receive service of process.
The other types of people specified by the article are: Corporations (§ 416.10 and § 416.20), Associations and Partnerships (§ 416.30 and § 416.40), Public Entities, such as Los Angeles County (§ 416.50), Minors (§ 416.60), People with Appointed Fiduciaries (§ 416.70), and Candidates for Public Office (§ 416.80).
See http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=ccp&group=00001-01...
In the unlikely event that the person you wish to serve with process qualifies for one of those categories, then process may be served on either that person OR his lawyer--either will be sufficient.
