Question:

i was recently denied for a court appointed lawyer because i made too much money (minimum wage).....isnt it my right to have legal representation

Selected Answer:

Each state and county can set

Each state and county can set its own rules regarding who is eligible to receive a court appointed lawyer due to their income. If you have requested representation and been denied, continue to ask the judge for assistance. Partial indigency may also be available. If you receive partial indigency, you are represented by a court appointed lawyer, and later reimburse the state for part of the cost of your representation. In addition, consider providing the court with information about your income and expenses to show the court that you would be unable to afford a lawyer on your own. If possible, consider talking with two attorneys and obtaining an estimate of what their services will cost to defend you in the criminal matter. These estimates may be able to help you prove to the court that an appointed lawyer is necessary.
