The process for clearing your record starts with a Penal Code Section 1203.4 [7] Petition (also known as an Expungement). Some courts do charge a filing fee/records research fee (for an example, San Diego County courts charge $120 for a Felony, and $60 for a Misdemeanor). Most courthouses have an "Expungement Packet" that you can ask for at the Clerk's Office; and if your income is low enough, ask for a "Fee Waiver Packet" as well. There are specific conditions that must be met to qualify for PC section 1203.4 [7] relief, but after the Petition is filed, and the Court grants the orders, the underlying criminal record will show as "Dismissed pursuant to PC 1203.4" on your Department of Justice records; and in many cases, you can tell prospective employers that you were never convicted.
