Illinois law prohibits a landlord from using methods outside of the court process to evict a tenant from a property. Therefore, a landlord cannot lock you out of the rental property without an order from a judge approving such action. You did the right thing by contacting the police quickly. In many instances, the police can force the landlord to let you back into your property. If possible, request a police report so that you can document the event in case you choose to file a claim against your landlord in the future. You can file a claim in small claims court for any damages that you have suffered due to the landlord’s behavior.
