overpayment of SSI funds

I had a stroke in 2007 and after being deined for a few months I was granted the help.  I am totally disable and still strugle with daily things.
 In 2008 I decided to sale a building and because I was not clear on the process of SSI I never informed them.  The people that are around me have never used SSI before so, I did not get any advice from them.
In 2009 March, I received a letter that I was overpaid by 17,000 and they want the money now.  They stop sending the monthly payments to me then.
I currently receive medical assistant and $107 in food stamps. There is no more of the money left from the sale of the building.  It was spend on credit debts and loan repayments.
Is there anything that someone could help me with?
